Catholic Boy Declines Duty to the Queen

feature photo

An 8-year-old Catholic boy, named Matthew, in Scotland has been notified that he’s not allowed to become a Cub Scout since he declines to swear faithfulness and allegiance to the queen.

According to his mother, Matthew liked to modify the wording so that he would vow to perform his duty to “God and my country” rather than to “God and the Queen”. His objection is motivated by religion and appears to be a case still unexplored because most Catholics agree to vow provided that they are permitted to change the reference to God so as to meet their faith. Moreover, his family disapproves of promising allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II since Catholics are barred from the throne as said by the 1701 Act of Settlement.

I applaud and salute this boy for fearlessly standing up to keep hold of his beliefs and conviction. However, it’s just disappointing to know that because he didn’t pronounce the Promise he would be effectively ineligible to become a Cub Scout.
